There are many interpretations as to who they represent, and whether they represent a mortal or a goddess. They may represent Persephone, the daughter of the goddess Demeter, whom Pluto took to the underworld for her beauty. The term hydria means an ancient Greek pottery vessel with an oval body, a distinct neck and a round mouth. The name "Hydria" is etymologically derived from water.
